Click an image to enlarge The paintings in this series have been inspired by the memory of musician Nick Drake and in particular his album
Five Leaves Left which
was recorded in 1969. I started this series in
2008, and it is my intent to complete a painting for each of the 10 songs from this
album.
I find Nick Drake's music happy, sad, powerful, mystical, healing,
inspiring and insightful. One particular verse I like is from his song 'Cello Song':
(here are some of those words)So forget this cruel world
Where I belong
I’ll just sit and wait
And sing my song
And if one day you should see me in the crowd
Lend a hand and lift me
To your place in the cloud
He
suffered from depression and insomnia throughout his life, and these
topics were often reflected in his lyrics. Upon completion of his third
album, 1972's Pink Moon, he withdrew from both live performance and
recording, retreating to his parents' home in rural Warwickshire. On
November 25, 1974, Drake died from an overdose of a
prescribed antidepressant; he was 26 years old.
